Salford City College Host Salford Olympic Fairtrade Festival With Salford City Council
20 August 2012
On Friday 17th August, Salford City College’s Eccles Sixth Form Centre played host to the first Salford Olympic Fairtrade Festival which saw 168 school children aged between eight and twelve years old compete for medals in basketball, handball and football.
The event, created by Salford City Council, started with an Olympic-style opening ceremony with children from across eight Salford communities representing different Fairtrade countries, such as Columbia, India and South Africa.
Salford City College is an avid supporter of Fairtrade and ethical produce, and has been a registered Fairtrade College for the past five years.
Michaela Booth, Catering Manager at Salford City College, said; “We are extremely pleased to be involved with such a terrific event, not only have the school children who have taken part in the Fairtrade Olympics had a wonderful day of sport; it has provided the opportunity for us to raise their awareness and introduce them to the concept of Fairtrade.”
Councillor Jim King said; “It has been a fantastic event that was created in the back of the recent London 2012 Olympics, with the added aspect of Fairtrade as Salford is a Fairtrade City. The theme throughout the event has been ‘Fairtrade and Fair Play’ and we have tried to communicate this through to the children participating in the event; if you play, you should play fairly; if you trade you should trade fairly; if you work, you should work fairly etc. It is wonderful to have the children enquire about Fairtrade and to be able to help them recognise that there is a wider world out there and that there are issues, such as Fairtrade, that need to be addressed.”
