Students Take On The 3 Peaks In Aid Of Salford Advertiser Christie Campaign
Students from Salford City College are ready for their National 3 Peaks Challenge.
On July 9th and 10th a group of students and staff from Salford City College will be taking on the National 3 Peaks Challenge, in aid of the Salford Advertiser Christie Campaign.
The group of 10 students and 7 staff have been busy over the past year training hard and raising sponsorship money for what promises to be a gruelling test of stamina, to climb the three largest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours.
Supporting the walkers will be a team of staff from the college who will be on hand to drive students between the mountains and also to ensure that food and drink reserves are on hand throughout the challenge.
All funds raised for the event will be donated to the Salford Advertiser Christie Campaign, which aims to raise more than £250,000 to support a new branch of the Christie hospital, to be built in Salford in 2011. So far the team have raised over £1000 but are expecting donations over the coming week to take the total near to the £3000 mark.
Ian Harvey, Head of Sport at the Pendleton Sixth Form Centre and leader of the expedition, commented: “This will be a test of stamina, teamwork and organisation and the students have shown fantastic determination already. A close friend and fellow walker died of cancer recently and so we are very excited to raise as much money as possible for this worthwhile cause.”
The group will first tackle Ben Nevis, in Scotland, before driving 300 miles to the Lake District, to climb England’s largest mountain Scafell Pike, and then a further 200 miles to Snowdon, in Wales, where the challenge will be completed. The team are determined they will be able to do this in the time-limit of 24 hours, to complete the national challenge which is attempted by hundreds each year.
Any donations to the cause can be made by contacting Ian Harvey at Salford City College, on 0161 736 5074 or at ian.harvey@salfordcc.ac.uk, who will then pass on the total amount to the newspaper to add to their grand total.
