Salford City College Sports Academy provides first class sporting opportunities in association with local teams and sports people. Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop sporting skills
  • Represent the college in competitions and leagues
  • Be trained by professionals from the sporting world
  • Learn new skills
  • Have fun and keep fit
  • Attend annual sportsperson dinner

Students on any programme of study at the college are able to join the Sports Academies and have the opportunity to compete in local and national competitions.


The academies include:


Boxing Academy

2004 Olympic silver medallist and WBA Light Welterweight World Champion, Amir Khan has formed a partnership with Salford City College. Amir Khan’s Gloves Community Centre provides opportunities to students at the college to improve fitness, gain coaching qualifications and acquire media skills.

The programme is run by staff at the college and professional coaches at Gloves Community Centre.


Cricket Academy

The Cricket Academy was set up by popular request from students who wish to start training and competing in the sport at a competitive level. The college has already established close links with Lancashire Cricket Club and Monton & Weaste Cricket Club where the college plays its home fixtures.


Football Academy

Students will learn new techniques, play in the English College’s Football Association League and other competitions, and can work towards a coaching qualification. All staff are qualified to a high level of coaching and we have professional footballers and managers from the Premier League who coach on the programme.

Rugby League Academy

The Rugby League Academy is run in partnership with Salford City Reds, of which the college is a main sponsor. Students can receive specialist training and compete in the Northwest College League. There is also the opportunity gain coaching and match official qualifications.

Snooker Academy

New for 2011 the Snooker Academy will give students the opportunity to hone their skills with a snooker cue under the guidance of Class 1 snooker referee Reg Davies at Swinton Leisure, as well as keep up their practice on the college’s brand new full-size table.

Volleyball Academy

You will be able to compete with other local teams and have the opportunity to enter national competitions. In 2010 the Salford City College volleyball squad won a national title in the British Colleges Beach Volleyball Championship in North Devon.
