Buddhist Day At Salford City College

Students at Salford City College are visited by a Buddhist monk, as part of international Buddha Day.

Konnekt To Faith, the multi-faith chaplaincy at Salford City College, recently organised a special visit for international Buddha Day, as part of their ongoing faith awareness programme at the college.

Lobsang Darjy, from The Buddhist Centre in London, visited students at the Walkden Sixth Form Centre of the college to talk about Buddha Day and its meaning. Lobsang, who escaped Chinese-occupied Tibet 10 years ago, also spoke of rights and freedoms and the importance of education, tolerance and the benefits of a multi-cultural society.

As part of the thoroughly engaging talk, students at the college were also given the opportunity to ask questions of the Buddhist monk’s experience and life and also sought to gain more information about the Buddhist religion.

Andy Powers, the Buddhist representative on the college chaplaincy team, also gave an address to the students and spoke of the importance of such awareness days at the college.

Andy commented: “It is fantastic to have the opportunity to address all faiths in such detail, giving students the chance to explore the many faiths options available to them and also raising awareness of those faiths students are less familiar with.”

This special day was part of a large programme of faith awareness days organised by Konnekt To Faith, which has included Passover celebrations, Hindu Holi Day celebrations and special Christmas festivals.
